Deepavali long weekend: what are your go-to cheap day trips from KL with the family?

The last stretch of the year always catches me out. With Deepavali this week, the school holidays right behind it and the year-end break after that, there are more free days than I have plans for, and I am not about to book a hotel every time the kids get restless. So I have been hunting for day trips that fit a normal weekend budget: water parks, farm stays, a museum, or just a good hawker stop two hours out of town. Wet World in Pedas has tickets going from RM15 this week, which is exactly the kind of thing I mean, a full day out for less than lunch for two at the mall. What I want to know is what actually works when you get there. Which spots are worth the drive with kids in the car, which ones are a queue by 10am, and which look great in the photos but are a letdown in person? Water play, mini zoos, fruit farms, aquarium trips, the lot. Share your regular places: which state, roughly what it costs for a family, and whether you would go back. If you also have a rainy-day backup for when the plan falls through, that would be even more useful.

Wet World Pedas is decent if you go on a weekday morning. On weekends the slide queue builds up by 11am and there is almost no shade in the seating area, so bring your own umbrella.

The farm stays around Kuala Selangor are the ones my children still talk about. Fireflies after dinner, and the drive is only about an hour and a half if you leave early.

For a rainy afternoon backup, the Bank Negara museum is free to enter and fully air-conditioned. My two stayed almost two hours in the coin gallery and did not ask for the phone once.
