ECRL to Kota Bharu at RM125 one way — would you take the train instead of flying?

The fare structure came out today, 19 October 2026. For the Transit service, Gombak to Kota Bharu starts at RM125 one way, and the Express on the same 523km route starts at RM147. Gombak to KotaSAS begins at RM60, while Gombak to Kuala Terengganu is RM95 on Transit and RM110 on Express. Children, seniors and OKU get 50 per cent off. Tickets only go on sale mid-November and commercial service is targeted for 12 December or earlier, so this is a year-end trip decision rather than something you can try next weekend. The question I keep coming back to is what it replaces. Flying means KLIA, baggage, and getting from Pengkalan Chepa into town. Driving means tolls, petrol, a tired driver, and everyone arriving already worn out. A seat on a train in the middle of it sounds calmer, but 523km is a long time with kids. If you already have a December trip back to Kelantan or Terengganu planned, have you worked out whether the train actually wins for your family, or is it still the flight?

The timetable decides it for me. If the transit service stops everywhere, a family of four will feel every one of those 523km. Waiting for the schedule before I get excited.

The fare is only half of what the trip costs. For anyone in Klang or Shah Alam there is another hour to Gombak and a parking bill before the train even moves.

The half price for seniors is the part that matters in my house. My parents refuse to fly now, so a December trip back to Kelantan finally has an option I can put them on.

Ticket sales open mid-November and the service starts mid-December. Anyone who has tried to buy concert or flight tickets on day one knows how that goes. Set an alarm or watch it sell out.

Overnight would be the real win. Sleep through the 523km and reach Kota Bharu in the morning instead of losing a day behind the wheel.

Transit at RM125 against Express at RM147 for the same route, is the difference only the number of stops? I would take the slower one if there is a proper meal stop along the way.
