AEON Credit switched on FacePay at AEON Supermarket KL Midtown on 6 November 2026 and is calling it the country's first facial payment at the till. If you are a registered Aeon Wallet user, the self-checkout recognises you and the amount comes off the linked account, so there is no card, no QR and no phone involved. The sweetener is up to 6x AEON Points on FacePay transactions, which is the part that made me read the terms twice. Groceries are the one category where a multiplier actually compounds for a household that shops weekly, unlike a multiplier on things you buy once a year. What the announcement leaves out is the boring operational half. One supermarket, no date for the next branch, and no clear answer on what happens when the camera will not read you with a queue behind. A face template is also a different kind of credential from a PIN, because you cannot change your face and you cannot leave it at home. So before this spreads to more outlets: would you register for it, or does paying with your face at the till cross a line that face unlock on your phone does not?

Saw the sign at Midtown over the weekend and assumed it was another scan-and-go thing. A camera reading my face at the self-checkout is a different level of trust entirely.
Honest question, does it still read you with a mask on or with a tudung that covers the chin? That is most of the queue at my branch on a Sunday.
My worry is the fallback. If the camera cannot read me and there are six people behind, do I dig out the card while everyone waits, or does a staff member have to come over with a tablet?
Six times points is genuinely a lot if you already do your weekly shop there. Most multipliers land on categories I never buy, but groceries hit the target without trying.
One store only means this is a pilot with a launch press release attached. I would want to see whether the kiosks are still switched on after Chinese New Year before I bother registering.
Facial payment is fine until the photo on your IC becomes the password. I would want to know how long the template is kept and whether the wallet can be closed without walking into a branch.
