Halloween is on Saturday 31 October — where do you actually find costumes in KL without paying mall pop-up prices?

Halloween lands on Saturday 31 October this year, so the whole weekend becomes dress-up: something for the office on Friday, kids' parties on Saturday afternoon, and every mall running its own thing. Which also means everyone in the Klang Valley is hunting for a costume in the same five days. The cheap route I keep hearing about is thrift rather than the pop-up shops. REFASH is running all clothing at RM10 storewide from 26 October to 8 November, at Sea Park (12pm to 10pm) and Paradigm Mall PJ (10am to 10pm) — a plain black outfit and a cheap wig reads as a costume from across the room. If you are only dressing up to go out, Starbucks Malaysia is doing 50% off selected handcrafted beverages on 31 October for anyone who turns up in an iconic costume, though not at Genting Highlands, Berjaya Hills, Semporna or the airport stores. So where do you actually buy? The mall pop-ups are convenient but the fabric is thin and the Saturday queues will be rough, and buying early means guessing both the size and the theme before the school even announces its parade. Where do you get yours — thrift racks, online, or the pop-up counters? And has anyone found a shop in PJ or KL that still has adult costumes left by the week of Halloween?

Last year we bought two costumes at a mall pop-up and the wings were already bent by the time we reached the car. Thrift rails first this time.

For kids, the school announces the parade about a week before, so buying early just means guessing the theme and the size at the same time.

Bring a change of clothes for the kids if you are doing the mall rounds. Those costumes get hot by noon and nobody lasts a whole day in them.

The RM10 racks are where I get the base pieces. A plain black outfit plus a cheap headband reads as a costume from three metres away.

Is the Paradigm Mall branch better stocked than Sea Park in the evening? Both close late, so a weeknight run might beat Saturday entirely.

Face paint is the part nobody warns you about. The cheap tubes stain, and my son had orange cheeks until Monday.
