If Waze really does get blocked, what are you using for the balik kampung drive this Deepavali?

Last Friday the government said it is considering a total ban on Waze, and MKN has already clarified that Google Maps will not be affected. TuJu, the local alternative, says its navigation feature will only be back by 6 November. Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November, so the first proper drive home lands right after all of that. What I would actually miss is not the routing. Google Maps is fine on a clear road and Apple Maps has caught up in the city. What Waze still has is people flagging a stalled lorry on the NKVE, a flash flood at a junction, or a roadblock before you are already sitting in it. Traffic colours on a map tell you it is bad, they do not tell you why, and why decides whether you wait it out or take the next exit. So the practical question for the drive home in two weeks: are you keeping Waze until the last day, or have you already moved to something else? And has anyone properly tested the offline download on Google Maps for the trunk roads? That is my fallback plan and I have not tried it beyond a short drive.

The reporting is what I would miss as well. A red line tells you something is wrong, it does not tell you whether it is a breakdown, a flood or an accident, and the three need completely different decisions from you.

Whatever you decide, test the new app on a normal weekend first. Doing the switch cold on the drive home to your parents is how you end up somewhere you did not plan to be.

Offline tiles on Google Maps work, but the routing without data is basic and it drained my battery the one time I actually needed it. Download before you leave and keep the phone on the charger.

My father refuses to use any of it and just follows the signboards on the North South. He reaches home around the same time as the rest of us, so maybe we overthink this part of the trip.

Has anyone tried Apple Maps on the big roundabouts here recently? The last time I used it at the Putrajaya ones it kept telling me to take exits that were not there.

If they do go ahead, it should be announced well before a festival weekend. Finding out at the toll plaza that your app does not work is not the way anyone wants to start a six hour drive.
