Is the iPad mini 2026 worth RM2,999, RM800 more than the 2024 model, or should you sit this one out?

Apple opened pre-orders for the iPad mini 2026 in Malaysia on 29 October at 1.10am, and it goes on sale on 6 November. The WiFi 128GB is RM2,999 and the 5G 128GB is RM3,699. The 2024 iPad mini with the A17 Pro started at RM2,199 for the same 128GB WiFi tier, so the entry point has moved up RM800 before you add anything to the basket. What the extra buys: an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel instead of the old 8.3-inch LCD, the A20 Pro chip from the iPhone 18 Pro, IP67 dust and water resistance (a first for any iPad), and a thinner body that is 38g lighter on the WiFi model. It is still a 60Hz screen with no ProMotion, still rated for 10 hours of video, and the box still ships a 20W adapter even though the 50% in 30 minutes claim needs 35W or more. So the question I keep going round on: if you already own the A17 Pro mini, is the OLED and the lighter body worth the jump, or is this the release to sit out until the 11.11 campaigns start moving the price? And for a first tablet in the house, does the RM800 gap push you towards the 2024 model while shops still have stock?

The price is what stops me. My 2024 mini still handles everything I throw at it, and 60Hz at this figure is the part I cannot get past.

For night reading the OLED is a real change, not a spec sheet line. I went from an LCD tablet to an OLED phone and stopped squinting in bed, and the 1 nit floor is the detail people skip.

Add a 35W adapter to your basket if the fast charge matters to you. It still ships with a 20W brick, so out of the box you get the old charging speed.

Pre-orders open 29 October at 1.10 in the morning. The 256GB is usually the one that goes first locally, so decide your storage before you set the alarm.

Has anyone seen the nano-texture glass on a demo unit here yet? The extra RM400 is the decision for me and I would not order it blind.

If you are studying or teaching, the education pricing is worth the extra step. Bring the student card, they do ask for it at the counter.
