Monsoon season is starting — what do you actually buy to keep the house dry and the laundry moving?

The first week of the monsoon is always the same in my house. Nothing dries, the towels start to smell, and the shoes by the door never quite come back to life. So this year I want to buy properly before the heavy rain sets in, instead of panic-buying in the middle of a downpour. My list so far is a proper indoor drying rack, a small dehumidifier for the bedroom, and a pair of covered shoes I can actually walk in through a flooded car park. The rainy-season promotions are already up in the usual places — Decathlon has its lucky draw running until late November, and the hardware and household aisles have started clearing their storage and bedding ranges. What I am not sure about is what actually works. Do the cheaper dehumidifiers help at all in a normal-sized room, or is the money better spent on a strong fan and proper ventilation? And for those of you in the flood-prone areas, what did you wish you had bought before the water came in? Drop your monsoon checklist below — house, car, wardrobe, and the kids going to school in the rain. I would rather copy a list that has already survived one season than learn it the hard way again.

A small dehumidifier was the one thing that fixed our bedrooms last year. No more musty smell on the bedsheets and the towels dry overnight. The cheap ones need the tank emptied twice a day, so put it somewhere you walk past anyway.

My trick is to hang the clothes in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on and a standing fan pointed at the rack. Two hours and the school uniform is dry enough to iron. The fully covered rack is the upgrade I would buy next, the open ones still let the damp in.

Also keep one dry pair of shoes and a spare umbrella in the car boot. The days I got caught at a mall with the roads outside under water are the days I wished I had packed them the week before.
