Store apps and loyalty programmes: do the member deals actually save you money, or just make you spend more?

Every shop in Malaysia has an app now, and this month alone we've got the MySOGO sign-up reward, Guardian's MYguardianRewards bonuses, the Coffee Bean membership with 50% off your first drink and Samsung's year-end promo paying out through TNG eWallet. It looks like free money at the counter, but I'm not convinced it really is. The moment you install the app the push notifications start, and suddenly you're walking into that store twice a month instead of once. What I want to know is how you all count the savings. Do you treat the points, the birthday voucher, the RM5 e-coupon and the free drink as real money off, or as a discount on something you would have bought anyway? My sister swears her coffee membership pays for itself, but she also drinks three cups a week now instead of one. So share your system: which loyalty programmes here are genuinely worth keeping, which ones quietly push you to spend more, and which app did you delete because the member deal was never available when you actually needed it?

I keep the ones where the discount shows up by itself. The in-app RM12 off at the pharmacy is real money, but points I have to remember to redeem are where I always lose interest.

My rule is one app per category. One pharmacy, one supermarket, one coffee chain. Every extra app just means another e-coupon I forget about until it expires.

The member price is the real tell. If the member price is what I'd expect to pay anywhere else, then the app isn't giving me a deal, it's just charging non-members extra.
