The iPhone Duo is on a Yes 5G plan from RM166 a month - is a contract actually cheaper than paying cash?

The phone went on sale here on 23 October, and Yes put it on a plan from RM166 a month on the same day, with an extra RM360 off, up to RM500 of extra trade-in value, a discounted case and a waitlist instead of walk-in stock. The Apple Store at TRX had the queue but not the units, so for most people the telco route is the only realistic way to get one before the year ends. A contract is tidier than cash in the first month and worse in the last. The handset is spread across the plan's tenure and the data is bundled in, so the honest comparison is what the same plan costs with no phone attached. The gap between the two numbers is the real price of the device, and it is never the figure on the banner. Then there is the foldable part of it. The inner screen is the one component that turns a bad month into a very expensive one, and paying a monthly instalment on a phone you do not own outright yet makes that repair harder to swallow. So for anyone who has been through it: did you take the RM166 route, or pay cash and keep the old phone in a drawer as a spare?

Ask what the plan alone costs with no phone attached before you sign. That difference is the handset price spread over the tenure, and on the last one I took it was noticeably more than the shop price of the same model.

Get the trade-in figure in writing before you commit to a waitlist. What they offer once the phone has already been set aside for you tends to come in below what was quoted over the phone.

Check whether the plan price drops once the handset portion is paid off. Most of these stay at the same monthly figure afterwards unless you go in and ask for a downgrade, and nobody at the counter mentions it.

I would rather pay cash and keep my old phone as a spare. On a foldable the spare handset is not a luxury, it is what you use while the inner screen is in the shop for two weeks.

Does the Yes offer include the extended cover, or is that on top of the monthly? With this form factor that cover matters more than whatever the instalment saves you, and it is usually the line nobody reads.

The listing says from RM166 but I could not find the tenure anywhere on it. Anyone know whether that is over two years or three, because it changes the total a lot?
