The Winter Time roadshow at 1 Utama runs 3 to 9 November, 10am to 10pm daily, advertising up to 60% off winter apparel and travel essentials. That week is not random: it sits right before the school holidays and the year-end travel wave, which is when most of us realise we own nothing warmer than an aircond jacket. The awkward part about buying cold-weather gear in Malaysia is that you are shopping half blind. The rack says winter, the tag does not tell you what temperature it actually survives, and nobody in the mall has stood in Hokkaido in late December. A trip to Seoul in early November and a trip to Sapporo in January need very different things, and the price tags look identical on the hanger. So I am curious how people here handle it. Is a roadshow like this genuinely better for the basics, or do you buy the cheap layers here and only spend properly once you land? And if you have been to one of these before, did the advertised 60% land on the items that matter, or only on the scarves and the luggage tags?

Layering beats one thick jacket every time. A thin down mid layer that packs to the size of a coconut does more for you than the big parka, and you can wear it here on the flight without cooking.
Ask the staff whether the cut is Asian or European sizing before you try anything. The European ones run long in the sleeve, and on a 170cm frame the cuff ends up past the knuckles.
Do not buy the boots at these things. Most of the stock here is fashion boots with a smooth sole, and the first icy pavement outside the hotel is where you find out.
Check the fill rating on the tag rather than the word winter on the hanger. I bought a jacket two years ago that turned out to be a shell with almost nothing inside, fine for Genting and useless anywhere colder.
Ask when the racks get topped up. At the roadshows I have been to, the good sizes go on the first weekend and by Tuesday it is mostly small and extra large left.
Confirm the return policy before you pay. Stalls in a mall atrium are usually not the same entity as the shop, so once the roadshow packs up you have nobody to bring a wrong size back to.
