Year-end health screening offers are everywhere right now — do you actually pay for a package, or just use the free mall ones?

Every mall I walked into this week has a booth: free blood pressure and blood sugar checks, a pharmacy roadshow with a bone health screening thrown in, and the labs running their own bundled panel. Some of my colleagues book one every year without thinking about it, others say the free ones are enough because the doctor will send you for anything serious anyway. My own view is that the free checks only catch what you already roughly know about yourself. The paid panel is what gives you a yearly baseline to compare against, which is the only reason I keep the old reports in a folder. The problem is those packages are bloated, so you end up paying for a long list of items nobody explained to you at the counter. For those of you who go for one: do you book the full panel, or just pick the few tests your family history actually points to? And how do you choose between the lab package and the hospital one when the price difference is real but the reports look similar? Keen to hear what has actually been useful, not just what the sales sheet lists. Also, when do you slot it in? End of year before the insurance claim window closes, or early in the year so you have the whole year to act on whatever the report says?

Did one of the bundled panels last year after skipping it for three years. What made it worth it for me was finally having a baseline, so this year the numbers actually mean something instead of being just a number on a page. The free roadshow checks only cover pressure and sugar, which I already know is fine.

Has anyone managed to swap items inside a package? My father's panel included three tests nobody in our family needs and the branch said the list is fixed. Wondering whether the other labs are more flexible before I book mine.

Timing matters more than people think. I walked up to a mall booth on a Saturday morning and waited nearly an hour because everyone does it on weekends. Weekday after lunch the same booth was completely empty.

Ask for the full report as a PDF, not just the one-page summary they hand over at the counter. I compare mine year to year, and the trend is what the doctor actually looks at, not a single reading.
