Year-end holiday planning: do you actually book at travel fairs, or just go for the luggage?

Travel fairs are everywhere again this month. The one at Pavilion Bukit Jalil runs for about ten days, and the cruise and package counters at MVEC have been busy since the weekend. Every year I tell myself I will just walk through and look, and every year I come out with something. The packages are the part I am still unsure about. The number on the board looks good until you compare it against the airline app on your phone in the same hall, and by then the agent is already asking for a deposit. The luggage and the winter wear are a different story though, those counters really do clear stock near the end. So how do the rest of you handle it? Do you sit down at the table and let the agent book the whole thing, or do you use the fair only for the bags and jackets and then book the flights yourself at home? And for anyone who has booked a package at one of these before, what did the deposit actually cover if the dates moved?

Booked a package at one of these fairs two years back. The free airport transfer was the only real extra, everything else matched what the airline app showed me on the same afternoon.

I go for the luggage and the jackets, not the packages. The counters on the last weekend drop the prices further because they do not want to cart the stock home.

Ask what the deposit covers before you sit down. Mine was gone completely when we shifted the dates by a week, and the free insurance they mentioned was the most basic cover on the list.

Weigh the bag empty in the shop and read what the warranty actually covers. Two of my four-wheelers lost a wheel on the first trip and the counter told me wheels are not part of the cover.
