Cashback vs discount in Malaysia

“Up to 30% cashback” and “30% off” are not the same thing, and one of them is worth much more than the other. This guide explains the difference, what to check before counting on cashback, and the order that actually saves money.

Discount or cashback — the difference that costs money

  • A discount reduces the price you pay, immediately and unconditionally.
  • Cashback is money returned to you later, usually after a delay and often subject to conditions: a minimum amount before you can withdraw, excluded product categories, a maximum per transaction, or a limited promotional window.

A 30% cashback on a full-price item can therefore be worth less than a 20% discount on the same item — because the discount is certain and the cashback is conditional.

The main ways Malaysians get money back

  • Cashback platforms — you start your purchase from the platform and it pays a share of the sale back to you. The rate is set by the platform, not by the store.
  • In-app reward points — the coins or bonus a store credits to your account after an order; usable inside that store only.
  • Bank card cashback — a percentage credited on your statement, usually capped per month and limited to certain categories.
  • Store loyalty programmes — points that convert into vouchers.

We deliberately do not publish per-platform rates here: they change without notice and we cannot verify them at the moment you read this. Always confirm the current rate and terms on the provider’s own page.

Check these five things before counting on cashback

  1. Minimum payout — can you withdraw, or is the balance trapped below a threshold?
  2. Processing delay — days, weeks, or “confirmed after the return window”?
  3. Exclusions — electronics, gift cards and already-discounted items are often excluded.
  4. Cap — a percentage with a ceiling can fall far below the headline rate.
  5. Stacking — whether it still applies when the item is already on sale.

The order that matters

1. The sale price first, cashback second. A cashback on an inflated price is not a saving. Before comparing cashback percentages, compare what you actually pay — and compare it against the item’s real original price, not the store’s “was” price.
